The Great South League morphed from the Georgia Collegiate League, a league formed in the fall of 2005 by the state-wide Georgia Dugout Club, a non-profit organization which promotes high school and college baseball within the State of Georgia. The GSL  expanded to 12 Teams for the 2008 summer season including teams in Florida and Alabama. For 2011 the GSL has 9 teams in 3 states becoming "The Mega League of the South" tm.

The GSL plans on adding more Tennessee teams in 2012 and a  new South Georgia Division in the near future including Thomasville GA; Savannah GA; Mount Vernon GA; Albany GA; Statesboro GA and Tallahassee FL .  The league is recruiting players and coaches nationwide for the 2011 summer season. Interested players and coaches should e mail the league at greatsouthleague@yahoo.com . New teams are planned for Conyers GA; Gainesville GA; Anderson SC; Greensboro GA in the  East Division and Carrolton GA and Rome GA in the West Division.
